According to foreign media reports, Russian grain export giant GrainGate has opened up a trade channel for oils and fats with China for the first time. The company's first batch of 1,600 tons of high-oleic sunflower oil took 30 days of multimodal transport from Tula Oblast to Vladivostok Port by rail, and then delivered to Nantong Port in China by sea.
The use of innovative soft tank container transportation technology this time marks a key leap for Russia from traditional grain exports to high-value-added oils and fats.
Grain Gates is Russia's largest grain exporter. In 2024, the company exported more than 15 million tons of grain and provided products to more than 40 countries around the world. The main exported products are wheat, barley, corn and oilseeds.
GrainGate chose high-oleic sunflower oil as a representative of healthy edible oil, which precisely meets China's consumption upgrade needs and lays the foundation for Russian oil products to enter the Chinese market.
Russia is the world's second largest exporter of sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is the main export product of the oil industry, accounting for 74% of all vegetable oil supplies. In 2024, 5.9 million tons of sunflower oil were shipped to foreign markets, with India and China being the main buyers.
In addition, Russia also supplies almost all of its rapeseed oil (92%) and soybean oil (73%) to foreign markets; their shares in global trade are estimated to be 18% and 7%, respectively. Among them, nearly 90% of Russia's rapeseed oil is exported to China.
According to my country's customs data, my country imported a total of 1.09 million tons of sunflower oil in 2024, of which 700,000 tons were imported from Russia, accounting for 64%. From January to April this year, my country imported a total of 169,000 tons of sunflower oil, of which 82,000 tons were imported from Russia.
