IVPA Seeks Higher Budget for Oilseeds Mission to Meet Edible Oil Target
India’s apex edible oil refining body IVPA has urged Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to boost budgetary support for the National Mission on Oilseeds, to address domestic production constraints and boost self-sufficiency.
In a formal letter, IVPA proposed hiking the mission’s budget from Rs. 21,000 crores to Rs. 30,000 crores—a Rs. 9,000 crore increase critical to meeting 45% of India’s edible oil needs domestically by 2030–32.
“This hike is essential to fix production constraints and reach ~45% edible oil self-sufficiency by 2030–32,” IVPA said in the letter.
IVPA suggested the enhanced budget go to priority areas: high-yield, climate-resilient seeds, refining tech upgrades, modern irrigation, rice fallow land expansion, post-harvest infrastructure, and market linkages.
IVPA also sought extending the NMEO-OP’s budget deadline from 2025-26 to 2030-31, to offset project delays from sapling and infrastructure issues and ensure mission success.
