Edible Oil Shortage Hits Dhaka, Bangladesh Markets Amid Pre-Ramadan Stockpiling

DHAKA, Bangladesh — A severe edible oil shortage has gripped markets across Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, as consumers rush to stockpile beyond their usual demand, fearing price hikes amid the ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel and Iran. The shortage has worsened ahead of Ramadan, a period of increased demand for cooking essentials in Bangladesh.

Five-litre edible oil bottles have nearly vanished from most Dhaka markets, while one-litre and two-litre packs are scarce. A visit to Meradia Bazaar, South Banasree, Badda and Shahjadpur on March 7 found no five-litre soybean oil at local grocery stores, nor at major retail chains like Shwapno and Agora—where two-litre stocks are limited to one bottle per customer.

Retailers in Bangladesh say company supplies have dropped over the past week, but top producers including Meghna Group and City Group deny cutting deliveries, blaming dealer stockpiling and Ramadan-driven demand. Meghna Group noted it imports extra oil for the holy month, distributing over 50,000 tonnes monthly.

For Bangladeshi families grappling with the shortage, a home oil press machine offers a practical solution. Compact and easy to use, it lets you press fresh, pure oil from soybeans, mustard or sesame at home—avoiding market shortages, price volatility and ensuring food safety for your family.
