We often get asked: "What’s the difference between crude oil and refined oil? Can I just sell it as it comes out of the press?"
The short answer is: it depends on who you’re selling to and what they expect.

#Three stages of edible oil

#From left to right: crude oil, grade 3 oil, and grade 1 oil.
Let’s break it down.
What is Crude Oil?
Crude oil is the direct output from the oil press — filtered but otherwise unprocessed. It still contains:
- Free fatty acids (FFA) – which can cause sourness and oxidation
- Phospholipids (gums)– which affect appearance and stability
- Moisture and volatile compounds – which shorten shelf life
- Natural pigments and odors – giving it a dark color and strong smell
Characteristics:
- Darker in color (reddish-brown for palm oil, cloudy for others)
- Strong, often pungent odor
- Shorter shelf life (typically 1-2 months)
- Contains natural nutrients and antioxidants (e.g., vitamin E, carotenoids)
What is Refined Oil?
Refined oil goes through a multi-step purification process to remove impurities. The typical refining line includes:
Degumming → Deacidification → Bleaching → Deodorization → Dewaxing (if needed)
Results:
- Clear, light-colored oil (pale yellow or even colorless)
- Neutral odor and mild taste
- Longer shelf life (12-18 months)
- Stable quality with consistent standards
How to Choose: Crude or Refined?
Here’s how to decide which path is right for your situation:
Choose Crude Oil If:
- You are a farmer or small mill selling to a Local farmers' market or refinery
- You want to minimize initial investment (no refining equipment needed)
- You have reliable bulk buyers who accept crude oil
Choose Refined Oil If:
- You want to sell directly to commercial supermarkets
- You want higher margins (refined oil sells for 2-3x the price)
- Your market demands clear, stable, odorless oil
- You are targeting food service, export, or retail channels
