How palm oil is extracted
The usual process of extraction and isolation of vegetable oils (such as olive or palm oil, tea seed oil, etc.) involves extracting the oily plant parts (seeds, fruits, shells) and then pressing and separating them.
In the case of palm oil production, we distinguish between red palm oil (from pulp pressing); the other is palm kernel oil (palm kernel as raw material). The first of the two oils is more common and is what this article is about. Palm oil can be effectively used in food, chemical and agricultural applications. It can be said that palm trees are a good economic crop.
The red palm oil production process is divided into three main parts: crushing, refining and fractionation. Crushing is the process of extracting palm oil from the palm fruit. Fresh palm fruit bunches are sterilized, defruited, crushed, and pressed to obtain crude palm oil (CPO); at the same time, during the pressing process, an oil cake mixed with palm fiber and palm kernel is produced. Some customers will separate palm kernels and then produce the palm kernel oil (PKO).
More specifically, in the sterilization section, the palm fruit bunches will be placed in a horizontal or vertical sterilizer and heated for 90-120 minutes. The purpose of this step is to destroy lipase and avoid an increase in free fatty acid content in the oil; high-temperature sterilization can make the fruit soft and facilitate mechanical threshing. After that, it is the threshing section which aims to separate the oil palm fruit from the fruit string through strong vibration. The fruit threshing equipment is a drum thresher. Before pressing step, we recommand to mashing the palm fruit (Digestion), in order to tear the skin of the fruit, separate the pulp from the core and mash thefruit, while heating to make the pulp soft and destroy the pulp cell structure, which is conductive to the precipitation of oil from thefruit. After the above steps, the palm pulp is sent to the screw oil press, and the palm oil is divided into: oil, water, a mixture of solid impurities, and cake (fiber and core). Under the action of screw pressure, the fat is separated from thefruit. The liquid part flows out from the lower port, is filtered and sent to the vacuum dehydration tank to obtain crude palm oil.
