Corn germ contains 40%–48% oil, making it a highly valuable pressing material. However, due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids, it is prone to rapid oxidative rancidity and cannot be stored for extended periods. Prompt processing upon raw material arrival is essential, which imposes strict requirements on the pressing equipment's ability to operate continuously and stably over long production cycles.
It is important to clarify that the oil in whole corn kernels is almost entirely concentrated in the germ. Directly pressing whole corn yields little to no oil and is therefore not economically viable. Moreover, corn germ is not directly harvested from the field; it is a by-product of the corn starch processing industry. As such, it often contains fine powder or meal residues. If fed directly into the press without pretreatment, these fines can easily clog the equipment and disrupt production. The crude oil obtained from pressing also typically requires filtration and further refining to meet finished product standards.
